Paw paw for Papaya!

You can find it everywhere in Bali, it is cheap and it is here all year round. Maybe this is why we take it for granted. But papaya is such a healthy and beneficial fruit that it deserves to be praised and taken super seriously in our diet and beauty routine.

It has luscious taste, soft butter-like consistency, and rich texture. Papaya can be eaten as a fruit, a smoothie, a milkshake, and as a vegetable in raw form. This tropical fruit is rich in vitamins A, C, E and K, and has antioxidant properties. It also contains magnesium, potassium, niacin, carotene, protein, fiber and an enzyme called papain that provides many health benefits. Papaya has been famous for hundreds of years and it was once called the “fruit of the angels” by Christopher Columbus. Not just the fruit pulp, even the seeds of papaya have many health benefits. So let’s take a look how amazing papaya really is:

• Better Digestive Health: Papayas are commonly used to aid digestion. The presence of papain, a digestive super enzyme, improves digestion by breaking down proteins and also cleanses the digestive tract. This ensures a reduced conversion of protein into body fat. If the protein in our diet is not digested prop- erly, it may cause arthritis, constipation, dia- betes, high blood pressure and other related health conditions.

• Weight Loss: Papayas are also good for peo- ple who are trying to lose weight naturally. Having a bowl full of papaya as a mid-evening or mid-morning snack is good for health.

• Relief from toothaches: A paste of fresh pa- paya roots can be massaged onto the teeth and gums to give relief from toothaches.

• Fights painful periods: Papaya juice can be of great help for women with irregular peri- ods. Consumption of green, unripe papayas can also normalize the irregularity in the pe- riodic cycle. Papayas are considered as a ‘hot food’, meaning that it produces heat in the body. This excessive production of heat in the body stimulates the estrogen hormone. This induces periods in the females. This is why papayas can be beneficial to handle difficult periods.

• Hydrates Skin
Papaya is rich in water content that helps keep the skin soft, smooth and moisturized.

Blend half a cup of ripe papaya into a fine paste. You can also add a little raw honey. Apply the paste all over your face and neck. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse it off carefully with cool water and pat dry your skin.

• Treats Wrinkles
You can use papaya to diminish the appear- ance of wrinkles. This fruit hasantioxidant properties that help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet around the outer corners of the eyes as well as wrinkles around the mouth or forehead. In addition, the vitamin C in papaya helps fight off free radicals that damage the skin’s collagen and elastin. Process is super easy – rub a small piece of raw papaya gently around the eye area for 5 minutes once daily to get rid of wrinkles. Leave it on for 10 min- utes, then rinse it off with cool water.

• It is delicious
When soaked with a bit of lemon juice and honey, it is an absolute treat for the taste buds. Yummy!■
