We can’t even believe it ourselves! That in more than two years of publishing Bali Pocket Magazine we didn’t write about ginger! That absolutely divine plant and superfood with so many benefits we can’t even think where to begin. But as with all the good things in life that surround us – in time you get used to it and start taking it for granted. So, ginger – our dear friend – we apologize for not giving you the well-deserved attention before. Good thing? Indonesia has ginger everywhere you go and it is cheep and amazing so everybody can use it! Did you know that ginger was first exported to Europe in the 1st century AD and was reportedly used extensively by the Romans?
Ginger is among the healthiest spices on the planet. It is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have powerful benefits for your body and brain. Here is what ginger can do for you:
Lower cholesterol levels
High levels of LDL lipoproteins (the “bad” cholesterol) are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. The foods you eat can have a strong influence on LDL levels. In a 45-day study of 85 individuals with high cholesterol, 3 grams of ginger powder caused significant reductions in most cholesterol markers. Studies suggest that ginger can protect against age-related damage to the brain. It can also improve brain function in elderly women.
Gingerol, the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, can help lower the risk of infections. In fact, the ginger extract can inhibit the growth of many different types of bacteria. It is very effective against the oral bacteria linked to inflammatory diseases in the gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Fresh ginger may also be effective against the RSV virus, a common cause of respiratory infections.
Help to strengthen the immune system
According to the ancient healing system of Ayurvedic medicine, ginger strengthens the immune system because it helps to break down toxins in the body’s organs, thereby cleansing the body’s lymphatic system. In this way, ginger prevents the accumulation of toxins in the body that increase susceptibility to infections, especially in the respiratory system. Combining ginger oil and eucalyptus oil is said to be an effective remedy to boost immunity and improve breathing.
Heal the gut and relieves nausea
In traditional herbal medicine, it is known to aid digestion and promote the release of intestinal gas, while also calming and relaxing the stomach and gut. Ginger also provides relief from morning sickness. For instance, research shows that taking one gram of ginger daily helps to reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnant women, along with relieving morning sickness.
