Indonesian fashion designer Sebastian Gunawan has shown his autumn/winter haute couture collection 2016 in the world`s fashion capital Paris this July. That has been just one more success in his long career that began in the 1990s.
Sebastian Gunawan is currently one of Indonesia’s biggest fashion houses for couture, bridal, ready-to-wear and evening gowns. His designs are western, with a strong European touch, enhanced with embroidery, Swarovski crystals, beads, semi-precious stones and sequins sewn by hand using the techniques of haute couture.
Sebastian that fashion lovers call Seba, is the king of “bling-bling” style and well known for his gowns that are very popular among fashionistas. He made his debut on the catwalk in 1995 with “A Life Portrait”. This collection kicked off his career, and he became known as “dramatic evening and ball gown” design- er In 2004, he represented Indonesia at the International Apparel Federation (IAF) in Barcelona and received the IAF Young designer’s award for his “I Miss Bali” collection. A year later he was invited to show his capsule collection at “Moda in 3D” in Rome.
He earned a degree in fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. The glamour of Hollywood seems to be a starting point for his inspirations, something that was later honed at Milan’s famed Instituto Marangoni. That is where he met his wife and creative partner, Cristina Panarese. The couple decided to live in Jakarta and Sebastian Gunawan launched his first fashion line in 1993. His desire is to make women look their best, as he said, and women are driving force behind his inspiration. His wife Cristina is working with him side by side in creating ready to wear clothes as well as the line of bridal dresses.
