Peggy Hartanto is only 28 years old and already established fashion designer, known outside Indonesia. She is the creative director of her eponymous ready-to-wear label Peggy Hartanto, which she co-founded in 2012 with her sisters, Lydia Hartanto and Petty Hartanto.
Within few years after the launch of her brand, her creations have steadily received global nods of approval and worn by prominent local figures to international names, such as supermodel Gigi Hadid and Zen- daya, rock star Gwen Stefani and actress Felicity Huffman.
The unpredictability of her creative mind and collections that eloquently speak the idea of ‘daring in simplicity’ lead to a ceaseless cult acclamation, winning her Asia Next Generation Fashion Designer Award from Harper’s Bazaar Indonesia in 2013 and Young Design- er Prize from The Australia-Indonesia Center in the year after. Fast forward to 2016, Peggy Hartanto was recently inaugurated as one of the young and distinguished games changers in the Arts section of Forbes’ 30 under 30 Asia list. Drawing inspirations from Steven Meyer’s floral X-ray photos to Albino creatures, Peggy translates distinctive shapes and rich colours of life’s wonders into unique pieces of dress and separates.
She was born and raised in Surabaya. In 2006 she moved to Sydney-Australia where she took her fashion degree at Raffles College of Design and Commerce. She graduated in 2009. with several awards and she was the best student and got an award for excellence in fashion de- sign. During her studies, she had entered and won numbers of awards and competitions in Australia and got featured in several national media. After finishing her studies, she landed a job offer in one of Australia’s prestigious high- end fashion brand – Collette Dinnigan.
Peggy is acknowledged of her clean, innovative technique of fabric cut and construction. In 2011, she established a label using her own name, Peggy Hartanto, a fashion label with strong concept design specialised in contemporary women fashion. She showed her very first collection at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2011 together with five others international alumni of Raffles. The label is known for its definitive design aesthetic, which is characterised by clean lines, bold colors as well as innovative use of fabric and construction in its ready-to-wear offerings for women.
The first Peggy Hartanto collection was introduced at the Jakarta Fashion Week in 2012. Since then, she has showcased her collections at various events and participated in trade shows worldwide. The label is now available at numerous boutiques and online retailers in Asia, Middle East and the United Kingdom.■
