The 2017 Ubud Village Jazz Festival runs at the ARMA Museum Garden for two days on August 11 and 12. It once again reinforces its status as Bali’s foremost jazz festival, and one of the best in South-East Asia, thanks to a stellar line-up of musicians from around the globe.
Praised by the artists, the Ministry of Tourism and the always supportive Ubud Royal Fam- ily, local community and public alike, the 5th edition pulled around more than 3,500 jazz lovers, for a rich and varied program, with more than 22 bands, performing on 3 outdoor stages, over 2 intensive days. The co-founders of UVJF, Yuri Mahatma and Anom Darsana aimed to showcase jazz in its purest form to nourish the community and bring together international and local musicians from all over the archipelago. Successfully of-fering a “Beautiful Music for Beautiful Minds” theme, the event reflected the profound splendour and diversity, jazz can provide.
For the very first time UVJF hosted a big band, the Glen Buschmann Jazz Academy Big Band from Dortmund, Germany. With 22 musicians, included two remarkable singers Dian Pratiwi and Sithara Schimaniak, the orchestra, led by Uwe Plath, blew up the audience with their vivid performance. The artist’s generosity has been displayed all over, with many special guests’ appearances notably pianist Astrid Sulaiman joining the big band or the brass section of Petr Kalfus and Matthias Bergmann powering up Yuri Mahatma’s quintet show. On the last day, it continued well after midnight, with one of the biggest jam session Bali has ever seen!
It was a record year, and we have much to be thankful for. See you next year! Ubud Village Jazz Festival 2018 will be held on August 10 & 11.■
